Call to the Priesthood: Jesus Christ calls all people to leave everything behind, to give generously to the poor, and to come and follow him. I am grateful for the priests, family members and friends who attuned my ears to this invitation from Jesus and to the invitation to become a priest that followed. I think of parishioners at my home parish, Our Mother of Good Counsel in Homer Glen, Illinois, of the campus ministry teams at Wake Forest University and Oxford University, and of the Jesuit vocations teams in the United States and Great Britain. Yet the call to follow Jesus is just the beginning. One starts to follow Christ in one’s vocation, but one must continue to follow Christ. “Remain in me, as I also remain in you” (John 15:4). It would have been impossible for me to persevere in this vocation to the Jesuit priesthood without the intercession of the communion of saints on earth and in heaven. Jesuit superiors and friends have offered encouragement and pointed out areas for growth. Benefactors have allowed for transformative formation experiences through their generous donations. The people of God have been patient with me as I have matured as a person and as a Jesuit. I give thanks to God for all those who have supported my vocation, and I pray that God will, by grace, make me a worthy servant of God’s people, especially the poorest among them.
